3/13/18 (art by @die.kwaad; art’s not related to post, but i’m in love with this visual!❤️) 1:00 p.m. mood: a mix of determined and isolated. thoughts: according to the @nlihc’s report “the gap”, “one of the biggest barriers to economic stability for families in the united states struggling to make ends meet is the severe shortage of affordable rental homes. the housing crisis is most severe for extremely low income renters, whose household incomes are at or below the poverty level or 30% of their area median income.” ✨ now, if any of you are like me, you probably aren’t entirely sure what all of this means. but, what helped me understand was to picture myself in this situation: you’re working your ass off in the only job you could find at this time that pays virtually little or nothing. what you get paid is supposed to be enough to feed you and several kids you may have. you’re currently living with a parent or grandparent, but are looking to go ahead and try to get a house of your own so that you and your children have more room. ✨ however, because of your low income, you can only afford to rent a home. so, you’re searching around for an affordable house to rent...but it’s so hard to find anything. that’s exactly the point. it shouldn’t be this difficult for those with low income (which is many people in the us, unfortunately) to find a place for themselves or their families to stay while they get themselves together. ✨ using the @nlihc’s website, i actually found that, in my state (texas), there are 30 or fewer available and affordable homes available for rent to people with low income. that’s, of course, way fewer than the amount of homes that are needed. that leaves a large amount of the population either stuck at a family member’s home, or homeless because they can’t find a home they can afford. ✨ say they do finally find one, though. according (again) to “the gap”, “facing a shortage of of more than 7.2 million affordable and available rental homes, extremely low income households account for nearly 73% of the nation’s severely cost-burdened renters, who spend more than half their income on housing.” (continues below⬇️)
according to this report by @nlihc, new jersey doesn't have enough affordable housing for even a third of the households that need it. nlihc.org/gap #thegap18
america has a massive shortage of affordable housing. be sure to read the new report from nlihc, available on march 13, highlighting the households that are impacted the most by this crisis. #nlihc #thegap18
